During the Civil War, the U.S. Army created the Department of the Gulf and the Army of the Gulf following the capture of New Orleans, Louisiana, by Admiral David G. Farragut in 1862. Major General Benjamin F. Butler took command of the Union occupation forces as well as the Department of the Gulf. The soldiers in the new department were then designated as the Army of the Gulf.
